At the bottom of this page you will find a link to a web-based curriculum pertaining to the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) database, the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act of 1993 (Brady Act), and the FBI's National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS). The link provides access to two courses designed to be self-paced and build upon your current knowledge of the aforementioned topics. One course is designed for judges and the other is for law enforcement officials.

These on-line courses require the use of a computer connected to the internet and are designed to be self directed. Their content is presented in modules containing media components, PowerPoint slides, PDF and Word files. Participants have 24/7 access to the course materials. Self-assessment quizzes provide immediate feedback on comprehension and reinforce the learning objectives.

These courses are a collaboration between the FBI and the National Center for State Courts. The project was funded by a grant from the Bureau of Justice Statistics. The course curriculum contains an overview of the NCIC, the Brady Act, the NICS Process, and the ten federal prohibitors which can disqualify an individual from the purchase or possession of a firearm. Special emphasis has been placed on the protection order prohibition and the criteria that must be satisfied in order to render someone federally prohibited from the purchase or possession of firearms.
